The Divine Call

As many know I have received a Divine Call to serve Grace Lutheran of Lancaster California. Man, calls are tough business. St. Paul had it easy --
he is struck blind - visited by Jesus Christ Himself and told to go to Damascus - end of story. I'll let you know when the Call has been made clear to me. Thanks for all your prayers.

The Reality of Death

I read a great piece this week about death. The link is here. Just my thoughts on the subject -- humanity (read modern culture) degrades life (abortion, euthanasia, etc) because we deny the reality of death. I preached at a funeral not long ago - "...do you know why we use such beautiful caskets? I answered that rhetorical question with this -- "to hide the ugly truth within - a dead human being." We are taught that death is a part of life!? Nothing could be further from the truth - God, our beloved Father, created us to LIVE - and live in perfect communion with Him. Death is punishment. The fear that most often accompanies death (i.e. on the part of the living) is simply the LAW of God unalloyed and at full potency. There in the casket is the result of sin and sinfulness - and it is gut wrenching and terrifying. How does one without faith in the Resurrection and the Life, Jesus Christ, face this enemy? I pray for them.

Thanks be to God that we have trust in Jesus Christ who has risen from death - it could not hold Him and it will not hold you who are in Christ Jesus! Live in the grace and peace of Christ.

Concordia Falcons break Camp

The Concordia Falcons players and coaching staff are (I would imagine) at this time going over what went well and what needs improvement from the scrimmage at Carthage early today. I will be photographing the game v Bethel next saturday. I am looking forward to it -- ALOT. I'll pass on any news I get and will post a couple pics.

Packers Flex their Muscles in 09-10

The boys in Green and Gold seem to be meshing well this season. The O line is being taken notice of in the local press. Formerly the weak spot of the team it seems to be one of the stronger this year. Aaron Rodgers showed the NFL last season he is ready for a leading and successful role on the Packers. I have yet to see them play missing both pre season games already played. I'll make my season picks AFTER I see them play.

“If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” St John 8

Pedagogy, teaching, training, passing the mantle, instructing, making wise – the Scripture is replete with these ideas. There is knowledge to be possessed, that for most is certain – it is often the manner of acquisition where in the debates rage. And so Truth is often seen as is beauty that is in the eye of the beholder. Perhaps you have heard it said this way – that may be true for you but… Or the every popular that’s your opinion. The skeptical consideration of truth is not an outcome of only modern society either. A certain Roman official questioned the same in about 30 A.D. “What is truth?”

In like fashion truth is questioned still today and perhaps even more than ever. Then, for all and sadly for you here today reality sets in – some truth will always remain however hard humanity strives to make it palatable or endeavors to deny it. One certain truth of life is that everyone will die. Ancestors have passed. Forefathers have been laid to rest. People cease to be. For you the truth is that husband, father, grandfather, uncle, friend – Christian, Bob has died. That is pretty inescapable – both in terms of our thinking an in terms of our experience. And therein is the sting of the Law of God – death. Saint Paul writes to the Corinthian Christians and to us,

“The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.

The law of God – yes, the command and commandment to do as God wills and works is good. The harsh reality of the Law is that we do not, we cannot keep it. And the consequence of the abrogation of the Holy and unchanging Law of God is evident – sadly it is as plain as the casket laid before you.

And so must we conclude that truth is simply the stark realization that all die? Certainly not, death is a reality – but Jesus Christ is the Truth. St. John in his Gospel records the words of Jesus that serves as a Spirit led comfort to you – Know the Truth and the Truth shall set you free. For St. Paul concludes his teaching about sin and death with these words,

“But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

It is the truth of Jesus Christ – rather the Truth Himself Jesus Christ that frees. Bob was well aware of the Truth of Jesus Christ. That Truth pervaded his life and teaching. Whether one is a public and professional educator or not the fact remains that all of us are always teaching someone, something – the only question is whether those subjects being taught are in line and in the light of the Word and will of Almighty God – I suppose that you need no reminder of the subject matter of Bob’s life…but just in case over the next days consider Bob’s obituary – teaching to the end.

Should we then end there with our romanticized memories and giddy thoughts of all the good that Bob was able to accomplish and teach? If so -- I and we have not learned well our lesson – for the lesson of the life of our deceased brother in faith Bob – is not what it is that he has accomplished but that which by faith was accomplished in him –

The truth of the lesson that lies in state before you is that sin and sinfulness find as its end death of the body and – and this is a true saying – without the One who is the Way, Truth and the Life death of the spirit.

Bob came to know the Truth that has upon his death set Him free through faithful teaching. Teaching that came to Him first in and through the cleansing waters of Holy Baptism – for on that Bob was enrolled in what one may rightly and faithfully call the school of the Holy Spirit. And his life from that day to the Saturday of his death was a matriculation in and through that institution of heavenly education. Through the faith engendered in him through Holy Baptism Bob came to know the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. He came to know the Truth and Jesus Christ set him free.

And do not be mistaken that the freedom your husband and father enjoyed came only through death – oh the ending of the struggle and suffering – while there is certainty that his suffering has ended – the freedom that Bob was taught and sought to exemplify and teach to you all – was displayed in the hopefulness that marked these final years. A person does not face his certain death with the candor, humor and ease that Bob did unless he knew and believed that he was set free from the condemnation and judgment that God metes out against sin –

Bob believed, taught and ever confessed the Truth revealed to him in Christ – that all who believe on Me though they die yet will they live. Christ Jesus takes the sin of the world upon Himself and in His death and resurrection life everlasting is won. That is the Truth – world, devil and sinful self can rail all they like - this is the Truth that sets you free.

In the end – that is when our blessed Lord returns to bring the culmination of our faith – the re-creation of all things in heaven and on earth – beloved husband, father, grandfather will return with our Lord Jesus. Body and soul once more reunited – he and we will stand before God Almighty – those who know and believe the Truth will be received into the heavenly city of God’s residence. The prophet Jeremiah teaches that in the great and terrible day,

“…no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”

Amen.

A Christian Word concerning the ELCA Statement on Human Sexuality

The following is an adapted version of an email from Reverend Paul McCain for use within the congregation I serve.

At its Churchwide Assembly, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) adopted a "social statement" on human sexuality that includes an endorsement of same-sex relationships that are "chaste, monogamous and lifelong." This is, of course, contrary to Holy Scripture which teaches us that God, in His creation, created man and woman to live together as man and wife in a chaste, monogamous and lifelong relationship. This is the natural order of things which is found in God's good creation itself. Deviation from the natural order, and natural law, are a consequence of the fall into sin. There is no middle ground on this issue. Sadly, this action demonstrates that the ELCA is outside the one, holy, catholic and apostolic church to the extent that it has embraced this false teaching.

What should we Lutherans do who do not share this view?

Pray for the ELCA that it may faithfully return to God’s Word.

Be clear about what we believe as Lutheran Christians who do not share the ELCA's opinions on this issue. To do this, it is good familiarize yourselves with the basic truths of God's Word regarding homosexuality. The pamphlet “What About Homosexuality” offers an excellent overview. These will be available in the narthex within the next week.

We also need to make it clear that we, in no way, are "excluding" homosexuals from the Christ’s Church. We exclude no one, but welcome all to join us as repentant sinners before the throne of a loving and merciful God. We reach out with God's word of Law and God's Gospel.

Please remember that even as much as we deeply disagree with this action on the part of the ELCA, and while it causes great grief and, yes, even anger, please remember that this is an opportunity to demonstrate loving care and concern for those caught up in this error and for those who are striving to resist this false teaching.

Make your witness constructive and take care that in zeal to condemn error you not “bruise the bent reed or snuff out the flickering flame”. Witness to the truth; speaking that truth in love. Do so humbly and without any hint of triumphalism or "good thing we are not like *those* Lutherans." We are all sinners before God and we must now bear one another's burdens, in love, truthfully and faithfully.

The importance of Catechesis

Regarding praying sans surname? A fellow brother in the ministry said, "its not a hill I would choose to die on." While that was not my intent, upon further consideration I concluded that I did a poor job of catechesis and therefore have withdrawn. May this serve to remind me and prayerfully others (by my mistake) of the importance of faithful and consistent catechesis.

Camps for D3 football begin round about the middle of August. I am a fan of Concordia University Wisconsin, having played there in the late 80's. I enjoy d3 ball, first because I played; secondly because these men are really "student - athletes." When somebody plays football for the love of the game it shows. Not that other levels don't -- but in the world of college football most of these men (99.9999%) will never play again. What's your team? Praying - Complete Disclosure?

This week I will be adding an insert in the bulletin explaining this practice. I am still framing it - and will post it when complete. Just a question for all out there - what is your personal practice (pastors) and congregational practices (laity)?

North Wisconsin District Convention

Attending the chief legislative assembly of anything is usually considered to be as exciting as an insurance seminar. However, we in the NWD of the LC-MS were, in my opinion, excused from sch suffering. Thank you to all who worked very hard for us to attend this convention and accomplish the work we were given to do.

Overall, I found the convention to be uplifting and encouraging. President Kieschnick presented the same address as all the other conventions I have read reports about. While the "River City" references were a bit suggestive of a negative attitude, I do believe that we have far more going for us, even as an institution, than we have going against us.

The Structure Committee was interesting. I think I find myself in the minority about possible structural changes being advanced. I surely do not wish to try to elucidate my thoughts about it all here - so if you wanna talk structure, you need to call me. Now my brief thoughts, a more centralized governance would not necessarily be all bad.
The Transforming Churches Network presentation was less satisfying.
It was great to be in that crowd as we sang with boldness and volume. I always enjoy that part of all ecclesial gatherings.

The conclusion +

Christ is still the Head of the Church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.

Growing interest in a return to the Catechumenate

Over the years the institutional church has gone through all the cycles of any sociological institution. It is my belief that the "identity crisis" we as LC - MS Christians are currently facing is due primarily to the desire of previous ecclesiastical leaders to ride every populist wave of the past 40 years - somehow thinking that these sociological swells will land all upon the shores of an island paradise in which the hard work of making disciples is a distant memory. Then... as many, both then and now, have wrongly believed the REAL work of the Church can begin. As I read the Scripture, the work of the Church is proclaimed with perpiscuity employing two common verbs - baptize and teach. The return of interest in the catechumenate strikes me as a strong desire to flee from the failed recent past and make baptizing and teaching the heart of a life long immersion into the Word and into the death and resurrection of Christ. In this hearts and consequently people, nations and the world can be changed.

It is a sickness unto death. The alternative is not beating the drums to revive flagging spirits, nor is it to move evangelism a few notches up on the bureaucratic agenda.

The alternative is renewal -- theological, pastoral, sacramental, catechetical. The alternative is to be something that others might have some reason to join."

From "Cyberbrethren" - A Tale of Two Bibles

As many of you are aware, Concordia Publishing House has been working hard at producing and publishing The Lutheran Study Bible. This work began nearly six years ago, and the title of the Bible was announced publicly a long time ago. We learned a year or so ago that the ELCA was producing a Bible and that they decided to call it: “Lutheran Study Bible.” The ELCA Bible is now in print. I encourage you, particularly if you are a pastor, to advise your folks that the ELCA Bible is not The Lutheran Study Bible by CPH. The two Bibles are quite different in content, style and purpose. Most significantly, the ELCA Bible takes a different approach on key doctrinal points than does The Lutheran Study Bible. So, please be aware, and spread the word, that The Lutheran Study Bible is coming, from CPH, in October 2009, and that the ELCA Bible is something quite different.

As an example of the differences between these two Bibles, here is how each deals with the Great Commission in Matthew 28. First, the comments from The Lutheran Study Bible, then the comments from the ELCA Bible. Each Bible’s notes on these passages are quoted in their entirety, without editing or excerpting.

The Lutheran Study Bible on the Great Commission
28:18–20 Though all God’s people are to bear witness to the Lord (cf Ps 145; Is 43:10), the focus here is on the apostles and their calling as leading witnesses and representatives of Jesus. (Compare to the authorization in Mt 10:1–7.)

28:18 “All authority.” Christ’s human nature, which had refrained from exercising the divine authority belonging to the person of Christ, now is fully exalted and given free use of divine authority (cf v 19). “He can also powerfully effect and do everything that He says and promises” (FC SD VII 43). “The Church’s authority and the State’s authority must not be confused. The Church’s authority has its own commission to teach the Gospel and to administer the Sacraments [Matthew 28:19–20]. Let it not break into the office of another. Let it not transfer the kingdoms of this world to itself. Let it not abolish the laws of civil rulers. Let it not abolish lawful obedience” (AC XXVIII 12–13).

28:19 “make disciples.” See note, 5:1. Jesus gives us the tools to make disciples: Baptism and His teaching. all nations. Not just the Jews, but Gentiles too (cf 10:5–6). baptizing them in the name. “Name” is singular, followed by the threefold naming of the divine persons. This illustrates the doctrine of the Holy Trinity. See p 0000. Those baptized in the name of the Father have God as their Father; baptized in the name of the Son, they receive all the benefits of the Son’s redeeming act; baptized in the name of the Spirit, they receive the life-giving, life-sustaining power and presence of the Spirit. Christian Baptism is founded on this institution. See note, Nu 6:22–27. baptizing. Washing with the water of new birth. “Baptism is no human plaything, but it is instituted by God Himself” (LC IV 6). “It is necessary to baptize little children, that the promise of salvation may be applied to them, according to Christ’s command to baptize all nations (Matthew 28:19). Just as in this passage salvation is offered to all, so Baptism is offered to all, to men, women, children, infants. It clearly follows, therefore, that infants are to be baptized, because salvation is offered with Baptism” (Ap IX 52).

28:20 “teaching.” Disciples are made not only through Baptism, but through the ongoing catechetical work of the Church. observe all. Christians are called to do more than “obey”; they are called to treasure God’s Word in their hearts. commanded. Not only Christ’s moral injunctions (the Law) but also His invitation to trust in Him (the Gospel). I am with you always. Not only in Spirit but also according to His human nature. See “be with,” p 0000. “He is present especially in His Church and congregation on earth as Mediator, Head, King, and High Priest. This presence is not a part, or only one half of Him. Christ’s entire person is present, to which both natures belong, the divine and the human—not only according to His divinity, but also according to, and with, His received human nature” (FC SD VIII 78). end of the age. 28:16–20 Christ commissions His disciples to go and make disciples of all nations through Baptism and teaching. Christ promises to be with us, and He is the one who makes disciples through our baptizing and teaching. Today, remember your Baptism and confirmation in the faith, which are precious blessings for the Lord’s disciples. His love and care are new for you every morning. • Send us, Lord, to make disciples in Your name in accordance with our callings in life. Amen.

The ELCA Bible on the Great Commission
28:16-20 the eleven disciples went to Galilee: The eleven meet Jesus on a mountain in Galilee. Even when the eleven see him, some doubt. Jesus’ resurrection returns to the question of his authority in 7:28-9:34; 21:23-32. Through the resurrection, God has given Jesus all authority in heaven and on earth. This does not mean that only now does Jesus have authority. It establishes his authority exercised throughout his life and ministry (28:20). The end of the Gospel sends the reader back to the beginning (4:12-9:34), and it gives God’s answer to the Pharisees’ charge (9:34). In contrast to 10:5-6, 23, Jesus now send the disciples to make disciples of all nations. That does not mean make everyone disciples. Most people who are helped by Jesus and believe in him never become disciples. Jesus includes in salvation people who do not believe in him or ever know about him (5:30; 25:31-45). Disciples are students, called for the sake of the world to learn from Jesus and to bear witness to the kingdom. They are salt and light (5:13-16). Jesus promises to be with them always as they carry out this mission. Previously, Jesus promised to be present in the exercise of forgiveness (18:18-20) and in the “least of these” who suffer (25:31-45). (p. 1658)

Awake, My Heart, with Gladness

The below words were written for inclusion in our monthly newsletter and so is perhaps liturgically a bit premature. I look forward to remarking on the mandatum of love and service given to our Lord's disciples and so also to us; of course this mandate flows the the very sacrifice Christ was to make just hours after that final earthly supper. Thanks be to God we are fed with that same heavenly food that we too, may fulfill the law of love.

Music speaks. It speaks to us all. I do not think that anyone can or would deny the wondrous response of music on the human mind, heart and soul; (both for the good and the bad). A tune that recalls fond memories brings a smile to our faces. A song associated with sadness can sour the best mood. The song you heard on the radio after being sure you were in love the first time brings to mind much different emotions and reactions that those sung at your grandma’s funeral. Songs and singing are a whole language in itself. The Church on earth (of which you are a living member) is a singing Church. And nowhere is this song more vibrantly displayed that in the hymns of Easter. What she sings is the heart of praise to God in Jesus Christ.

I want to share with you a few verses of my favorite hymn that celebrates the Resurrection of our Lord. Hymn 467 in the Lutheran Service Book, “Awake, My Heart, with Gladness”. This hymn was written by Paul Gerhardt (1607 – 1676.) Hymns provide a wealth of devotional material; words to pray over and meditate upon regarding the love of God, the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, or the work of the Holy Spirit. Here are a few thoughts concerning a hymn that raises me in joy and hopefulness.

1. Awake, my heart, with gladness,
See what today is done;
Now, after gloom and sadness,
Comes forth the glorious Sun.
My Savior there was laid
Where our bed must be made
When to the realms of light
Our spirit wings its flight.

The heights of the highest mountain peak cannot reach the height of the soul that recognizes its salvation in Jesus Christ. The very first verse takes us of from Christ’s death, that ought be ours alone, to His and so also to our resurrection. Easter is the dawning of the eternal new day brought to be by Jesus Christ. The slumbering heart, dull and dozing is jolted to attention at the mighty and glorious act of God!

2. The foe in triumph shouted
When Christ lay in the tomb;
But, lo, he now is routed,
His boast is turned to gloom.
For Christ again is free;
In glorious victory
He Who is strong to save
Has triumphed o’er the grave.

The devil and the world were mistaken. The death of Jesus was not defeat but victory. The One born of woman took a hit to the heel but in doing so dealt a death blow to the head of the old evil foe. (Genesis 3:15)

3. This is a sight that gladdens;
What peace it doth impart!
Now nothing ever saddens
The joy within my heart.
No gloom shall ever shake,

No foe shall ever take,
The hope which God’s own Son
In love for me hath won.

What sight brings true gladness? It is the sight of the empty tomb. Gerhardt exclaims the peace that is held in the heart and life of those believing on Jesus Christ. Christian joy is the hope that cannot be overcome by gloom, taken by enemy or emptied of its power. Saint Paul acknowledged it first when he wrote,

“For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8)

The joy of the resurrection is yours today. It sets free your conscience. It unbinds your heart. It comforts and grants Life to your soul. It is the source of the love you live and share. As the Resurrected Lord Jesus blessed His disciples on that first night after His resurrection so He blesses you, “Peace be with you.” (Saint John 20) I encourage you, read the hymns of the Church, pray them, study them, learn them by heart for in doing so you are being firmly grounded in the Word of Christ. Beloved, His Word gives Life. A blessed Feast of the Resurrection to you, Pr. Leary

The Christian Life as a Life of Hope + Romans 12:12-21

For those who may be reading this material please know that these are my outlines...I preach more than 3 or 4 minutes at a time...Just ask my parishioners!!

As Faith and Love are intimately connected...So also are Love and Hope.

One gives way to the other.

Saint James speaks of the slippery slope – whereas sin is fully grown it gives birth to death. How often we struggle with the negative consequences of our fallenness.

However, there is a foundation on which we are being built upon – the foundation of Faith in Jesus Christ, revealed in love and expressed in Hope.

Hope in Christ does not disappoint.

Hope in Christ IS NOT as hope in and of the world.

The hope expressed in the world is nothing more that a fortuitous co-mingling of supposed luck and good timing.

Christian hope is no pipe dream or wish. Christian hope is a possession given by God, given to the believer by means of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Scripture proclaims that hope is in God and in Him alone. Saint Paul makes reference to the reality, the personage of our hope in...

Colossians 1:4-5 “…we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, because of the HOPE laid up for you in heaven.”

That hope residing in heaven is confessed in some of the Christian questions and answers in the Small Catechism.

“Do you hope to be saved?” “Yes, that is my hope.”

And in the next question we find the answer to what is Christian hope.

“In whom then do you trust?” – the answer, “In my dear Lord Jesus Christ.”

From this hope we ought ever draw joy.

“…as it helps us bear the burden of the never ending claim on your love…your service to the Lord is the taking of His light and easy yoke.” (Franzmann)

Christian hope is always future directed.

Not as seeking “greener pastures” and decrying the present as irrelevant

But rather recognizing the victory that awaits us…and then being moved in this hope to joy and joy revealed in compassion, mercy and service.

Hope in Jesus Christ creates the heart that is open to share the love of God as He abundantly gives it.

In this hope the persecuted can pray for the persecutor.

The sorrow and joys of others can and are borne in us who share in their trials and celebrations; because you are no longer see your own sorrow or joy as being of ultimate significance – for you, having faith in Jesus Christ, have a loose hold on the blessings of this age.

Christian hope reveals Christ.

Saint Paul continues in Romans 12 with a litany of opportunities, options and examples of the expression of hope in Christ.

The call to overcome evil is product of the victory of Jesus Christ. For in service and fervent love, joyfully given are you recognized for who you rightly are – a man of God, a woman of God.

Christian hope is expressed in love given in faith this is the revealing of the victory you possess in Jesus Christ. Amen.

There is no shortage of “love speak” in the world but does the world mean the same as our Lord who says…
Love your neighbor
God is Love
Love covers a multitude of sins
They will know you are mine if you love one another

Saint Paul speaks of love as a mark of the regenerate life in Jesus – the Christian life.

Love reveals itself in giving for another.
The Apostle warns against hypocritical love – i.e. a love that acts only to receive.

Human love is give and take – but that is not the fullness of love that the Christian is called to live and offer.
The Spirit moves in us the divine love that comes in and through faith in Jesus Christ.

Faith and love are so related that any division is fluid at best.
Faith and works, love and trust – The Apostle Paul and Saint James agree. Faith without works is dead.

What drives godly love? – It is a love that seeks to offer itself in honor and sacrifice to God.
That others may come to know the relationship we share with our Heavenly Father through His beloved Son.

That others may then come to (by the Holy Spirit) trust the One who exemplified this greatest love. The love of God for sinners is seen in the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus.

This as our foundation we are granted avenues for service one to another.
Love in families
Love in congregations
Love in all the world

Practice of Christian love is hard, deliberate work…It requires
Prayer, encouragement, discipline and practice.

The call to be “selfless” is not a call to self depreciation. Rather it is “an emphasis on the positive, on seeing the person beside you with the eyes of the God of all mercies, a person of infinite worth, a person for whom Jesus Christ died, worth your love and honor, not because they are such and such a person but simply because they are there, placed by God…this Christian love can never remain a sentiment; it becomes an action with a zeal that does not flag – this is the work of the Spirit – and He is the source. (Franzmann) Amen.

Humanity is imaginative -- we can and we do make all manner of STUFF
Both for the common good and for the common NOT SO good.

We MAKE but…

God alone creates – for to create is to make something where once there was nothing.

The LORD did it with the world in which we live.

He does it with the human heart that beats. (CREATION)
…to the soul He gives life. (JUSTIFICATION)
God creates the Christian’s life. (SANCTIFICATION)

The means for all of God’s creative and “re-creative” activity?
THE WORD.
Whether it is the audible, written or incarnate or visible it is the same – LORD Jesus Christ.

This Gospel -this Word creates…
Both the Christian
and the Christian Life

This Christian life is called in Saint Paul’s foundation to Romans Chapter 12 – “spiritual worship”
Jesus in Saint John 4 teaches the Samaritan woman about “worshiping in spirit and in truth.”

Saint Paul makes the connection with the creating Gospel and the new life that is created.

The inward transformation of soul and mind reveals itself in manifest good works.
It is by their fruits that you will know them.

The Father has proclaimed time and again through the prophets that false religion of mere cultic ritual fals short of the glory of God.
I desire mercy and not sacrifice…
These people Me with their lips but their hearts are far from Me…
I detest your new moons and your Sabbaths…

And this is the condemning LAW – we do not live a life of God pleasing words, thoughts and deeds –
Realistic examination and confession make this clear

Divine consequence for such lawlessness is death
death of both body and soul – a sacrifice of blood is called for to work forgiveness.
It (this sacrifice) is accomplished

Connection with the final words of our Lord - Words like all the Word of God creates and (re)creates reality

and now…
Saint Paul uses THEREFORE in his letters to show that what follows is based on what has been previously established
– in this case the New Life of the Christian is based on the atoning death of Jesus Christ.

“The worshiper no longer gives to God the life of another creature” [in sacrifice]…for since Christ has been offered and sacrificed (the all availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross) there is and can be no greater offering – having been re-created in the image of Christ through Holy Baptism
“…he [the Christian] gives God his living self”

As these New people of God you “…are called upon to anticipate, in their [your] bodily activity, the life of the world to come, to assert in action the reality of that world now”

Your “spiritual worship” – the life you lead, choices you make, words you speak, actions you defend, plans you decry,
“…is a constant and embattled no of nonconformity to this world, or age which is an “evil age” (Galatians 1:4), a world whose “god” is Satan.” (II Corinthians 4:4)

The stage set by Christ, His death, His resurrection and ascension - Justification stands free - your sins are forgiven for Christ’s sake - you cannot win nor earn salvation.

Now possessing the very treasures of heaven – be “transformed by the renewing of your mind.” This calls for the Holy Spirit to reveal to us that which is pleasing to God and of aid and help to all –

It also calls for a practiced discipline, prayer and constant encouragement.

In the weeks to come we will follow St. Paul as he”…has established a Gospel base for his admonitions” “He gives examples of how the new man [creation] “proves” [determines and accomplishes] the will of God; he does not prescribe that man do any “proving” for himself.

As the Scripture teaches – may the Holy Spirit of God allow us to live a renewed life of…

Faith
Hope
and Love

The greatest of these is…
The love of God for you promised, revealed and accomplished in Jesus Christ. Amen.

Lamb of God, Pure and Holy

This sermon is an adaptation of a sermon from "Lamb of God, Pure and Holy" (CPH LENTEN SERIES) I am using it as the foundation for a Lenten Series I have outlined according to Franzmann's partitioning of Romans chapter 12. It is entitled Sacrifice of Life + Life of Sacrifice. It is an attempt to more firmly ground in the minds of the parishioners I am called (as well as honored and humbled) to shepherd that Christian stewardship (not financial alone) is the natural fruit of faith in the Sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Stewardship is sanctification and sanctifiction can begin nowhere but at the cross of Christ - our justification. Franzmann's outline is found below.

The Christian Life as Life of Vocation

For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 1 Peter 1:18–19

Grace, mercy and peace to you from God our Father and from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Beloved in Christ – Perhaps the weather does not show it as much as we would like but “spring cleaning” is just around the corner. That time of year to open the windows that have been closed for so long. Searching in the darker recesses of our rooms and homes to allow the fresh and bright newness of restored warmth and glow into what; at this time of year seems like a - forever darkness. It is necessary now and then to stop and do some major cleaning around our home and work. Cleanliness may be next to godliness, but the frantic, frenzied lives we live seems to leave little time for either one. And this neglect begins to show after a while.
You may be one can live with a certain amount of clutter in your house, but no matter what your tastes messy souls are another matter altogether. The season of Lent arrives to school us all in repentance; call it…spring cleaning for the soul. And for that reason Lent is such a good thing, spiritually speaking. For forty days you and all Christians join with Christ as He makes His way to His cross. You, through faith, confess His bitter sufferings and His redeeming death. Mournfully you attend His grave, and are raised to newness of life by His glorious resurrection.
Lent is a season of repentance - that is, it is a season of deliberate and focused intention to turn away from sin. But because repentance involves both sorrow over sin and faith in Jesus, faith that brings forgiveness and new life, Lent is also a time of cleansing and renewal - cleansing and renewal in and by Jesus, the Lamb of God. May it be that by God’s Holy Spirit in and through the Word that you spend this Lententide: airing out stale souls, clearing out the clutter of sin-filled hearts, tossing out the trash, and finding refreshment and renewal in the blood of Jesus Christ, God’s Son, which cleanses you from all sin.
From the recognition of spirit deadening sin from which we must repent; turn to the sinless Lamb of God. He comes clearly into focus in the words of the apostle Peter, who writes that Jesus is “a lamb without blemish or defect” 1 Peter 1:19.

Our fallen nature demands that we be again reminded how unique Jesus is in that department; otherwise the devil and sinful flesh leads us to see Jesus as any other person – a well intentioned man to teach us how to be better…to ourselves and maybe even to others. This false understanding does not recognize Jesus for who He is – and it is judged accordingly as sin and sin is punished by God. The Bible teaches that the Son of God was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary as true man, like us in every way save one: He was without sin. Therein is the lifesaving and sin forgiving difference. Jesus faced the same temptations you and I face each day. The marked difference is that Jesus resisted those temptations, while too often we give in - or even embrace certain temptations to sin with open arms. Because we are defiled and contaminated by sin it should come as no surprise when we feel dirty and polluted, for we have fouled ourselves not just in what we do but also in what we say and even how we think. There is truly nothing good in us when it comes to our sinful nature. We are thoroughly blemished in our sin. These blemishes are not surface but it goes to the heart of your being and we are disqualified from the presence of God and so stand under His wrath and judgment.
Salvation and eternal hope is NOT found in sympathy, empathy or even compassion. Rather it is found in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. In His suffering and on the cross, Jesus expended His life as the price to pay the debt of death – for God proclaims that the soul which sins is the one that will die. And so Jesus, the sinless Son of God, was made to be sin for us, so that we might be made the righteousness of God. All who trust in Christ not only find their sins removed and absolved, but by faith in Jesus they share in His holiness; before the throne of Almighty God - you stand -- holy – even as Christ is holy, without spiritual blemish or defect.
The fisherman Peter turned apostle teaches that your heavenly status in Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, also has a profound effect for the life you live here on earth: “you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers” 1 Peter 1:18.
How do you recognize this empty way of life? It is most vividly revealed in the desire to live solely for yourself. Modern parlance seems to define it as our “freedoms,” but what it boils down to is the freedom to do as you please, the freedom of an unbridled will. The Word of God calls such selfish freedom – what it truly is -- bondage. “There is a way that seems right to a man,” we read in Proverbs, “but in the end it leads to death” Proverbs 14:12. Wherein then does the Christian find true freedom? Martin Luther here makes a faithful statement, the Christian is both "a perfectly free lord of all, subject to none" and "a perfectly dutiful servant of all, subject to all." Freedom to live for God and this reveals itself in service to one another. That we may grow in such maturity and faith during Lent we will build on this the foundation of Christ and His offering of Life. Each day we have both the honor and responsibility to live in the love and as we heard in the sermon last week reflect the light and grace of God in Christ. Your growth in the Christian faith is never a simple decision on your part but is indeed the work of the Holy Spirit in the Word, by the Holy Sacraments, in and with Christian counsel and exhortation. The Lord God bless our worship throughout Lent that we may come to see our freedom foe what it truly is – freedom from death and hell – freedom to live for God and for others.

Christians, life is more that what you can gain for yourself. True Life is what Jesus Christ has gained for you. His is the Sacrifice of Life -- in which you find your life -- a life of Sacrifice.
By His grace, you belong to Him. In Him you find refreshment for your souls. Unshoulder your burdens, put away your sorrow, set aside heartache and pain. All this and more the pure and holy Lamb of God has taken with Him to the cross that by His death He would redeem you, make you pure and holy like Himself, and set you free to live under Him in His kingdom and serve Him in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and blessedness; even as He is now risen from the dead, lives and reigns to all eternity. Amen.

The Word of Christ

The writing for the day(2/24/09) in the TDP (Treasury of Daily Prayer) grants a certain sense of perspective to life in this world of “SELF righteousness” and “SELF improvement” and really any other use of the adjective SELF. Luther remarks concerning the near stoning of the woman caught in adultery. The Reformer’s words make a substantive point regarding justification. It addresses redemption in this manner– it allows God to be God; that is, God is the justifier of all (manifestly in Jesus Christ). He alone can and does grant forgiveness. It also moves to this end - that God alone may be worshiped and glorified.

Luther writes, “A sinner is a person who feels his sin.” Thus only those sinners belong in the Kingdom of Christ who recognize their sin, feel it, and then catch hold of the Word of Christ spoken here: I do not condemn you.”

The justification of the sinner is not alone in their recognition of their damnable place before God – but rather in the absolution offered by God in Christ.

Therefore Luther can comment that, “the Pharisees, these rogués were no sinners; but they became sinners when Christ said, ‘Let him is without sin, etc.’ Now they became sinners. But they despaired and slunk away. In their arrogance they hid their sin and would not await Christ’s second statement: ‘Neither do I condemn you.’”

Herein lay the difference between the justified and the condemned; the Word of Christ.

Naaman and the Gifts of the Holy Sacraments

Below is the sketch for my sermon this week. It fouses on the simple means of the Sacraments to do the miraculous - grant us that which Christ has won on the cross; the forgiveness of sin, life and salvation.

INTRO:
Saint Mark and the healing of the leper
The instructions are to show the priest and offer the appropriate sacrifices.
What is the heart of healing?
Physical restoration? – partially

Worship laws would not allow for a leper (someone unclean) come before God in worship – the physical ailment consequently caused a spiritual malady.
Christ sends the man forth able to come before God once more and be found acceptable.

The greater concern for him and for all is not always the physical – but the spiritual.

TRANSITION TO OT
Naaman – needed a restoration of body
A great military leader the thought of seeking help – counseled no less than by a slave girl of the Israelites – preposterous.
Yet moved by his king he did just that.

APPLICATION
The similarity is striking – great men and women all of us – in no need of aid – or are we?
We are friends. And our cry (so often utter and prayed by God the Holy Spirit on our behalf) is one of wholeness.
It may be a physical healing
It may be emotional support
It may be deliverance from fear and anxiety

Whatever the symptom the sickness is the same -- a leprosy of spirit – the corruption of the soul that reveals itself in the brokenness of your bodies and lives.

GOSPEL SOLUTION
There is one who comes to make the broken whole. It is Christ.

Jesus was foreshadowed by Elijah and Elisha. Healing comes as God sees fit and affords.
Naaman was upset that the means of deliverance was so common and unimpressive. Looks as it is said can be deceiving. By simple washing the sick was made healthy.

Do not let self righteousness allow you to turn away from the simple means God has provided for you and for your healing.

Simple water – washes the spirit clean giving life and salvation – filling you with the Holy Spirit.
Common bread and everyday wine – feed you on the heavenly manna of the Son of God Himself – and this food strengthens beyond this life – it is that which nourishes you now for the life that is to be and which lasts forever.

Elisha simply spoke of healing – today the same preaching and speaking is laid before you – the speaking of the Son of God who heals the sick, who preaches life into dry and dead spirits and souls.

You are given the prescription of all healing – for the healing of the body comes after the restoration of the soul. For one day to be certain we all will be raised again – the body as God intended it – not beset with sin and the physical consequence of that sin – but relieved of sin and so made whole and vibrant. Never to tire, nor to be lame, blindness is no more and dead is a thing of the past.

This is the healing that God offers in Christ Jesus – His offering of Himself has purchased this for you. Simple means to work the most sublime of miracles – the forgiveness of sin that brings everlasting life.

The Joy of Computers?!

The work of the Church is at a standstill!!! - (tongue in cheek) Look how far we have come since the simple and perhaps simplistic (as misunderstood by "forward thinking" entities) preaching of the Word and faithful expression of Christian love and service in our daily vocations; or better said - see how far we have fallen? Thanks be to God in Jesus Christ that the tool of God's activity is His Holy Spirit --working in and through the Word and Sacraments. May we never lose sight of the love that God showers upon us in His Son and the Life that comes in that glorious knowledge and trust!

Hilary of Poitiers writes concerning this love,

"Gifts of price are the evidence of affection, the greatness of the surrender of the greatness of the love. God who loved the world, gave not an adopted Son, but His own, His only begotten...Here in is the proof of His love and affection, that He gave His own, His only begotten Son."

The discipline of God -- In the Holy Scripture the elect are assured time and again that our God chastises, prunes, reproves, corrects, chides...etc. all those for whom He has great love. Yet, time and again sinful hearts resent such correction. Fallen and corrupted human flesh and blood always and ever seeks its own comfort and satisfaction. Our Father's (often gentle) temporal rebukes serve to deliver us from a more dire and eternal punishment. Beloved, know that the Father, [who may allow what for a time we see as struggle or misfortune] can and is, by His grace shown in Jesus Christ, using it for your eventual and eternal blessing.

The Discipline of Blogging

It has been about 2 weeks since St. John Lutheran Church installed their new pastor and my new partner in the Office of the Holy Ministry. He is a blessing to me. How joyful it was to hear a Christ filled sermon while in the Divine Service. But that is not how I began this piece. My intention was to convey my frustration with my inability to be disciplined in my blogging efforts. Truth be told - I don't often hold my own thoughts to be of value for public consumption - kinda defeats the purpose of blogging - well, as in all things it is simply a matter of discipling oneself to write -- It is not that I don't have opinions about things -- I have an opinion about everything (I'm Irish)! It is with reserved optimism that I will achieve my goal of consistent and substantive blogging. Perhaps this piece was enough to push me over the edge.......................

A Comment on Christian Preaching

A friend and former classmate at St. Louis Seminary penned a piece about the state of Evangelical preaching today. The assessment that he made is no different than that which I perceive.

All too often the call is for "relevant preaching". You know how to be a Christian parent, how to balance your checkbook like a Christian, how one may open a Christian business, and others ad nauseum. Please understand the role of the Holy Scripture is to give voice and view to the heart of God toward us as revealed in Jesus Christ.

The use of the LAW (after all that is what "how to..." sermons are) is as St. Paul, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit put it - "For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin." Romans 3:20

I know of no more relevant topic than that of a God who can and does forgive. The stresses and strains of life will never be overcome by simple cosmetic applications to our finances, or social interactions...becasue the problem of a broken heart still remains. The means by which we, who are broken, may be bound and healed is the power of God in the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Here is a fine example of a Evangelical Christian sermon proclaimed by the Christ Himself.

"And he (Jesus) said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself."

The Holy Spirit fill all Christian sermons - those you preach and those you may hear with the glory of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

The Lord doth Provide

As if I ever really thought anything other -- the Lord our God and Savior has through His Divine Call brought to St. John a man to work with me in the fields. Reverend David Szeto of NYC will be installed on 18 January 2009. I look forward to the opportunities that Christ may allow us in the years to come. For the Love of the Game

Today the UWW Warhawks take on the Knights of Wartburg College for an opportunity to play in the Semi Finals of the D3 national Tourney. Wow - there is a concept for the the NCAA D1 crowd -- actually have a PLAYOFF not the customary PAYOFF. Yes, I am pretty certain that the BCS is some demonic entity. Enough!
If you have never seen d3 football -- do yourself a favor and check it out! Wisconsin has (this is just trying to remember them off the top of my head) at least 15 d3 teams - ONE near YOU! These men get no scholarships, no perks, nothing that any regular student doesn't get -- they play for the love of the game and that is what makes it what it is -- great football. The Coming Presidential Elections

With November 4th just around the corner my thoughts have turned to the election of our Synod's President in 2010. Whereas in civil politics (an oxymoron?)men and women put themselves forward for office - we in the Church are taught (and I beleive rightfully so..) that the man must never seek the office but rather that the office seek the man. I firmly hold that is how it took place here in the North Wisconsin District. The Lord our God rasied a man from among us and -- he has been a faithful servant. So...since the call to president comes not from anyone seeking the call (is the election of president a "call" as we understand it either historically or confessionally?) WHO WOULD YOU OFFER AS NOMINEE FOR SYNOD PRESIDENT?

Pretty Vacant

There was a punk rock band in the late 70's that sang the song "Pretty Vacant", currently working on the second year of the vacancy at St. John I feel that way as well. But what is great about all this is that our Lord Jesus Christ will provide...of that I have no doubts. I do, however, wonder about the timetable sometimes though. Which Christ? // Zechariah 9 and Saint Mark 9

Over several evenings this past week I enjoyed watching a DVD entitled John Adams. It is a mini series about the development of our nation, as seen through the eyes and the life actions of the second president of our nation. This being the Independence Day holiday we should consider the perceptions we hold about our founding. As for me, and maybe you as well – the framing of our Constitution, the development of a free society and the establishment of our government – well, I thought it to be filled with the same joy and frivolity with which we celebrate the 4^th. If however this series, based on a biography of John Adams, is anywhere close to the truth – the work of our founding fathers was one of frustration, loss, frailty, wrongdoing, selfish indulgence and all manner of less than 4^th of July type ideals.

I raise this question of how it was to point you to a great question of how it is with you and with your faith in Jesus Christ. Thanks be to God for those who endured hardship and persecution – for by it we have a free nation to this day. Thanks be to God that we have been given faith to believe that our Lord Jesus Christ is the creations Savior from the consequence of sin and of the prison of death.

There are two texts I would like you to consider today. One written in the Prophet Zechariah, the other in the Gospel of Saint Mark, chapter 9.

“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, your king is coming to you;
righteous and having salvation is he,
humble and mounted on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”

“And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one on earth could bleach them.”

Both define and describe the Lord Jesus. Which Christ is the Christ for you? Which of these would you have be your Lord? I will admit that this is trick question. Yet, knowing that -- take a moment to honestly answer the query. Where would your heart fall? Does it side with the humble or the high? Will it take its home with power or with poverty? Does the soul of a fallen humanity seek a cross or glory?

Truly, examine your heart and life. We all know, what I call the Sunday School answer – the cross, of course. We search out the Jesus of humility and service. What then of the action of your lives, mine, as well. Sinful human beings seek glory. Brett might be back. Glory. Promotion at work. Glory. Pride. Glory. Vanity. Glory. Achievement and advancement. Glory. Having the best life now. Glory.

A twist on a commercial you all know. Worldly fame and advancement, the cost of time with your family. Worldly gain, price, often your conscience. Self-righteousness? Worthless.

An honest evaluation of life and priority must lead us to conclude that though we confess the right answer of cross, our lives more often reveal our true desire – Glory.

This is the sad and eternally condemnable situation in which all find themselves. Human nature is such that it seeks its own glory and shuns all that is contrary to glory. Saint Paul reminds you of the struggle that ensues,

“The good that I would I do not and that which I do not want to do, this I do”

Endeavor as you will to lead a selfless life, before God and before the world. At the end of the day – we still must admit our failure. Acts on behalf of others are often motivated by self interest. And good intention before the Throne of the Almighty God, does not stand.

The best of intention, here we find Peter in the account of the transfiguration. I will build three shelters…Peter is reveling in the glory that is revealed. Here is the glory of the coming Kingdom of the Christ! Let us remain here. We must not return the plain, for down there the world seeks to turn us away, to reject – to kill. The way of the cross is no way for the King of Heaven. Glory.

The Triumphal Procession – the crowd seeks to make Jesus a king – perhaps a king as the world sees kings. Glory. The prophecy in Zechariah is here fulfilled, but it is not fulfilled as mankind would have it accomplished.

Again, in the garden, Peter takes up his sword to thwart the cross. Malchus, the guard, his cleaved ear lay in the dirt. Glory.

Consider the other avenue; that which Jesus the Christ walks. His is a path of willingness and obedience. He does not seek the glory of His own will. Rather, His will is subservient to that of God the Father. Where Adam and Eve sought to fulfill their glory seeking will over against that of God, their and our, Creator - Jesus Christ seeks the humility of obedience. Here in lies the difference. Glory is not as the world offers it – glory is found when we fulfill the will of our God.

And it was the will of God, that Jesus Christ, confessed by Peter and the others, as recorded in the Gospel of last Sunday, would suffer and die. No glory, only cross. This desire and plan of God is not a confession of His inability to redeem you and His beloved creation. It is instead, a confession of the great love that He has for you. We would seek to do it differently. That thought betrays our sinful desire for power and authority that belongs to God alone.

There was no other way that God would be satisfied. Sin calls for the shedding of blood. Sin must be punished – or God is not God. And in this seeming contradiction you must see the love that is given you. Love for you allowed the Father to offer His Son. Love for you moved the Son to offer His life as a sacrifice for your sin, and that of the whole world. Humility, obedience, yes, even suffering and death – here we see real glory revealed. It is by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ – that the Father’s expectation of righteousness and holiness is fulfilled.

Glory is yours in abundance. You possess it even now. Your world and life may not be all that you desire. Take heart. Your success may not be success as the world defines success. Your glory – that is the glory granted you in Christ – this is hidden. It will be revealed in fullness at the coming again of our Lord Jesus at the Last Day.

Although, you endure the pains of suffering and struggle – The LORD offers glory in and through the gifts of His Church on earth. In, and among you is the glory of God. Common bread – Christ gives His body as the assurance of the forgiveness of sin. Everyday wine – the shed blood of Christ that drowns death. Simple words – read and preached - that speak and create the Truth of the grace of Christ in your lives. Water, so often taken for granted, gives life eternal, as the words and promises of God declare. You, like Peter, John and James witness the revealing of the glory of God, right here in the Divine Service.

This glory that is revealed to you is also revealed in you. There is a world filled with the consequence of sin and death. You hold within you by God’s Holy Spirit – the glory that can and does overcome such corruption. As you share this grace – for God’s glory is His grace – the Father bless you to the end that you bear the cross of Christ, faithfully. The glory of the Kingdom is here – pray earnestly for it complete revealing – when the King of Glory Jesus Christ returns. Amen.

A Toned Down Jesus First?

Anyone read the newest Jesus First publication? Is it just me or does it seem a might less biting that it did before the convention? I don't wish to speculate as to why -- just an observation. The cover article does make this good point - prayer for and about the elections that are upcoming in the next year -- the Lord of the Church will surely provide for workers in the harvest field. If you end up being nominated for service - please do faithfully consider this calling. Frankly, I am not the most ardent supporter as to the current polity set up -- however, that being said, the Old Blue Ribbon Task Force on Structure does not have my vote, either. What structure is biblical, confessional and efficient? Any takers?

If you don't know him, or at least what he has accomplished - you should. He has not cured cancer or set about bringing peace to the world. What he has done, anyone who roots for the underdog will appreciate. Beaver led his team the UW Whitewater Warhawks to the D3 Football Cahmpionships for several years running. 2007 finally saw his team take the trophy. Justin was awarded the Gaglardi Award - the award given to the best D3 football player annually, both on the field and off. He was also invited to the Packers rookie camp. He did not get an offer sheet - but for all of us who ever wanted just the chance to don an NFL helmet and give it a go -- thank you. As a former player, as a D3 fan and as a father - I am glad there are still men like you out there.

Sunday Sermon for Lent V + Is Time Really on your Side?

While I do not have the manuscript for yesterday's sermon - here is the gist of my preaching.

Introduction -

Use of the Rolling Stones song - Time is on my Side. That along with the placement of the Paschal candle - either Easter or funeral -- and it is not Easter yet. Time is NOT on our side.

Text - Saint John 11 -- Lazarus being raised. Death comes - not when we are always prepared, but it comes.

Transition -- Time well spent is time spent as God ordains it - Love God and Love your neighbor.

Yesterday Too much time is spent here - regrets of sin past as well as romanticizing what went before. Yesterday is gone. Thanks be to God there is forgiveness in Christ - for while we cannot undo our sin ridden past - God can and doe through the death of Jesus.

Tomorrow - dreams and hopes, worries and wonders - Jesus tells us the truth when He counsels, have no worry for tomorrow -- and Saint James as well - do not say we will do this next year or that but IF THE LORDS WILLS...

Today -- is the day of salvation. Hearing, trusting, Believing on Jesus and His blessed sacrifice is the only reality we have -- yesterday is gone and tomorrow never comes --- trusting on the life and death, the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ TODAY is the Holy Spirit preparing us for...........................................Forever.

Time is not on our side - but Christ is and so come what may life or death we know that for the sake of the Lord and His meritorious death we have the gift of time today - that we love God and neighbor and that He prepare us for the time to come - with out end.

"The Justice of God" + sermon for Midweek 4

Grace, mercy and peace to you from God our Father and from our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Beloved in Christ –

There are hard words to hear in life. When you found out your first girlfriend has grown tired of your company. Learning that you will lose a job or a beloved member of the family to sickness; these are hard words to hear. As a child coming to understand that you must move from the only place you had ever known. As a child of God hearing that judgment begins with the household of God.

Yes, there is a Word of God that speaks in no uncertain terms about what the consequence of sin is to be – it is judgment. And there is no place less desirable than to be a sinful person judged before the perfect throne of our Holy God. Those are hard words to hear.

Saint Paul writes about this wrath that comes against all sinners. “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men…”
And lest we somehow become comfortable in our position before the throne of God's glory – Paul continues in chapter 2, “Therefore you are inexcusable, O man, whoever you are who judge, for in whatever you judge another you judge yourself.” In fine Lutheran fashion we ask, “What does this mean?” It means that we all stand before God and before man as being guilty of some sin or another. And if we have not sinned in deed, we have sinned in our very being. We are all sinful human beings. We are all corrupted creation – not by God’s design but by our fall to temptation. We are in need of a new judgment that acquits the guilty of our guilt.

Can God acquit the guilty and yet be holy? He can and He does; for there is one who suffers the punishment of God against our sin. It is Jesus Christ. The punishment of God comes upon Him – His own Son through the means established by God.

Pontius Pilate was a man considered for his brutality. He accomplished what he did with a hard hand and an expedient eye. Pilate was no saintly person by any standards. He did what he did and was who he was – no equivocation; no excuse. The Father of all Lights used a dark man to accomplish His will for a fallen race.

The Lord often used those men and nations to accomplish His bidding. The Egyptians held in bondage the sons of God – that God might reveal His glory in choosing and delivering them to the Promised Land. Once in the Promised Land – it seems that these delivered children forgot the promise of freeing forgiveness in their God and so it was the Babylonians sent to do the alien work of God and captive they became. Even now the ruler of the people of God is one placed by the occupying empire of Rome.

The punishment of God in and through the work and warfare of opposing nations seems unsavory at best and unfair. Yet, consider what God says about such punishment. He considers the punishment rendered as chastisement to teach and uphold. Yes, you are considered to be children of God to be taught and corrected. You receive such punishment for sin that you might be delivered from greater sin and an eternal judgment against your soul.

Our Father may use what we see as wrongheaded means to teach – but it is for the will of our God to decide. Consider Christ. It is ultimately NOT Pilate who judges Jesus. For all his posturing and politicizing the procurator could not find a way out of this religious malady and so he symbolically washed his hands of the whole ordeal.

It was Almighty God who through Pilate judged the Lord Jesus Christ. For God judged Him as guilty bearing all sin. It is by the teaching of the Holy Bible we know and so believe that Jesus Christ was and ever shall be without sin of His own for which He must account. The sin that lays heavy on Jesus is your sin and mine. It is the sin of the entire world. In His baptism in the Jordan River Christ Jesus took upon Himself to be united with the fallen creation. He who knew NO sin became sin for us. And so through Pilate God judged His Son – the One we confess as Lord and Savior. Thereby sin was judged in the human body of Jesus Christ. His suffering and death on the cross is the due for sin – this one death paved the way for many to be made alive.

This Jesus is so named as Savior because even as God judged through the means of misled religious leaders and ruthless Roman prelates - so God judged you in Christ.

This is the good news that accompanies this terrible judgment scene. It is the truth that because Jesus was without sin – the grave did not – the grave could not hold Him. As God judged Jesus – so God has judged the entire world – in Jesus. The gift of forgiveness and so the gift of and everlasting life in heaven is simply given by God. This gift is received by faith – faith that hopes and holds on to all that our Lord offers and gives. Faith that seeks to grow in its relationship with Christ. Faith that sees the will of God and desires so to do. Faith that clings to Jesus Christ – trusting that as God has judged sin in Jesus and that our Lord has overcome such sin and death – we are free from these bonds as well.

Consider now the word judgment. While God does judge sin – and at times even chastises us whom He loves – the judgment that condemns has already been spoken against Jesus alone. His judgment has become your judgment. And Jesus was judged to be – righteous and holy and so you who are in Christ are as such -- you the guilty, for the sake of Christ Jesus, are acquitted of your guilt.

The Temptation of our Lord

It was a great joy this past Sunday to preach on Saint Matthew 4. Here we are ever reminded that the Lord, Jesus Christ, undertook temptation as the One who stands in our stead. When you consider the text do not focus so much HOW Jesus does what He does - uses the Word to defeat Satan (law perhaps) -- while that is textually present and theologically and homiletically important - consider more so WHAT He does (Gospel perhaps) - stands for us and defeats the Accuser for us. It is Scriptural to say that Jesus was tempted throughout His life on earth. I imagine one of the most severe must have been the temptation to "come down from the cross and we will believe in YOU!"

Thanks be to God that Jesus did not succumb to that temptation -

If Jesus Christ comes down from the cross we would have NOTHING to believe in -- faith is in Christ crucified.

It has been long since I have written - vacancy aside - no excuses, I was lazy. So on this day on having been prompted by our blog moderators I offer an analysis of the GBP/SEA game from saturday and why the Packers will beat NYG on Sunday.

Physical play. The Packers looked on Sunday as if they actually enjoyed the hitting as football was long ago. The likes of Huff and Butkus, Nitschke and Dobler must have been pleased. No dome - play like men in the cold and snow. If you got dinged - so what - as my coach always told us -- and this was in HS "...rub some dirt on it and get back in there."

The Pack played football - Seattle tried to "win".

Green Bay should physically dominate both sides of the ball. We have better OL and DL, better LB, much better secondary, better recievers, more consistent running game and yes, even our old QB - but old just means experienced. GB by 10... Now if only the PATS would lose - but that's another story.

LAST CHANCE FOR THE IBFC

I beleive the have an opportunity to put the IBFC in the playoff win column before the elder conference is buried. The boys in blue must play near flawless football - but I would put the CU D vs the BU O just about any week.

The ABC's of the D of the IBFC will encourage BU to mind their P's & Q's while the CUW O will dot all the I's and cross all the T's with a victory PDQ! IMHO!

Mount Union College of Ohio is the D3 defending National Champion. And yes, they use a playoff in D3 - no commmercials, no money to or from boosters, no scholarships to play FB -- just young men who love the game. MUC has the longest winning streak in the NCAA - they have won 8 of the last 10 titles -- SO those who love competition pray -- not that MUC gets worse but that the rest get better!!!!!! Just kidding, my guess is that our blessed Lord does not work to cover the spreads on D3 FB games,(or any for that matter) He could, I just don't think He does. Here's to a great D3 season!!!!! Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation

It is not hard - at least for me - to become discouraged and more than my normal cynical self in this world. Satan works -- nay, nay -- he attacks to destroy the peace we are granted in Christ. The devil schemes to cause us to look other than the wounds of Jesus Christ for our worth and hope. Our sin and the consequences we bring upon ourselves add to the accusations brought by the accuser. We trust that we cannot be moved from God in Christ. Yet, we struggle with the daily joy and hope that ought be ours. The words of the psalm, "restore to me the joy of Your salvation" is often my most ardent prayer. Let us not lose hope - for Christ is soon to return. Continue to work and pray, sharing the life saving and life changing Word of the Gospel. The PEACE of God which passes all understanding keep your hearts and mind in Jesus.

The Convention Over -- what about our heritage?

I have not yet looked at all the resolutions and actions passed this past week in Houston. What I did see and hear was not all to my understanding of the theology our synod purports to believe, teach and confess. I believe I saw the Specific Ministry Pastor Program passed. I am not sure how that will play out and to be honest I don't know where I fall on the issue. I need to study more and consult with other brothers. A buddy of mine said it well, a lot of "feel good fluff" -- sadly he is right. many applause -- well deserved, the worship committee especially for LSB. Now maybe we can finally begin to come to grips with who we are -- and agree on what we are to be doing. Christ be with us and grant us peace.

Dear Christian Friends, I was just reflecting on the joy it is to be truly evangelical. That is to possess a faith that is rooted in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Each week I and all who gather are priveleged to hear the Word, spoken and preached. Each week I and all who gather receive into our mouths the true body and blood of Christ. We cannot be bound closer to God than this -- just some thoughts about our great heritage as Lutherans - I pray our synod is preserved from all the spiritually vague, religiously fasle, poitically correct protestantization -- I will be praying for the work of the convention.

Another convention is nearing in Houston - Houston in July! I often wonder how the work we are called to do gets done. Surely, the Holy Spirit is active in and through the Word and Sacraments - but I mean humanly speaking. We are a synod that is divided in several places along foundational lines. The authority of Scripture is the big one. Until those that seek to make the Scriptures just another in a long line of self help books depart for their own little denomination - we will fight an up hill battle. God direct the work of this convention for His glory and to the saving of many through faith in Christ.

The Howard Payne University football program took 22 players on a ten-day trip to Sweden and Finland in mid-May to play football against two European teams. In the two games they played, the Yellow Jackets defeated the Swedish club-team, Tyresö Royal Crowns, 41-7, and the Finland Junior National Team, 68-0. It was not just about the wins, though. The Howard Payne players were also given the opportunity to share their lives and the Gospel of Jesus Christ with the Swedish and Finland football players and fans.

A joyous time is the celebration of the Ascension of our Lord. He, having defeated death and hell, now makes His return to Heaven. The Messianic Exodus is complete. I truly look forward to the day He comes again, "in this same way" as the angels reminded the disciples.

I am a fan of true student athletes; our d3 levels. Having palyed at that level I am more than an advocate -- I am an apologist. So from time to time I will consider some of the news coming out of the d3 schools and camps and without hesitation offer my two cents worth. Hey, "it's only d3 football, but I like it."
